I do believe that art deco became popular because it did provide the people of the great depression a way to escape from the harsh reality of the everyday struggle. During tough times wether its during a war or the country is hitting hard times, art has alway provided some kind of escape that always seem to find that right tone that matches that time or in most occasions it provides a way to provoke an emotion that they want to express. Also, art has provided a snapshot of what was happening during that period of time with having similar idea that conveys an emotion that was felt during that time period. Using the colors to help and the designs that is out of the ordinary of what people of that time expects made the pulp magazine so popular, the “out of this world” stories of aliens trying to take over or old western shoot outs between cowboys. Bringing excitement and adventure that although may not be realistic and seems to always end on a happy ending. To an audience that lived in a rather harsh life that they have to struggle just to survive the pulp books are a nice change for them.

Gutenberg
Gutenberg was such an influential person in design history because his invention help create a faster way of printing. the invention was monumental because it significantly cut down the amount of time that is needed in order to copy a book. It also helped books to become more affordable to the common people, without this invention we could be still copying books by hand through rewriting every story that was created. I believe without that invention we wouldn’t be able to purchase any thing that is documented without spending a lot of money it would probably take months at a time to just to print one novel.
From our class activity I learned that it’s not that easy to simply choose letters and put them on paper though the press of ink and pressure it to the paper and call it done. Although the process didn’t seem too difficult I can understand that using the blocks you can make a simple mistake with confusing certain letters with each other due to the fonts that can be chosen can look very similar to each other with small variations to them versus what can be written by hand and would a lot of time to create.
Propaganda
The methods that was showed that they used as propaganda was portraying war and the army as something that was exciting and they would travel the globe by showing men in navy or solider uniform smiling with bright blue sky in the background. Another method that was used was challenging a man’s masculinity by using women and children to do their part in the war wether it was joining the war or helping the war effort through bonds. I do feel that the methods that were used were effective to a point that it was able to trick a person into joining by deception. I don’t think the methods that was used in the past would as effective as it was in the past since people of today are more aware of how bad war actually is and we are more informed through the news and media. I do see that some propaganda that is used today are similar others that used joining the army as an honor and as to earn great respect in life. Also, today’s propaganda do tend to use family as way to draw people into join and using sympathy of army families to have others pay the governments.
cave paintings-week 2
The cave paintings were so significant because they showed us that early man had some way to communicate with each other during their time and shows how much detail they placed with painting animals that they hunted over time. I do believe that the creators did intentionally create the paintings mostly because the artwork appeared on the walls of cave more than one occasion and they appear to use the same type of picture of animals and other symbols that could represent themselves. I believe that early humans are trying convey what could be hunted during a certain time, their group were there once and the cave is safe to use, what type of dangers that could around, or even to show others what achievements of large game from their hunting group had manage to accomplish together. People do have the need to communicate with each other since we are mostly known to be very sociable and also we the need to become close and build communities with one another to stay safe. If I was a early human would like to leave behind my handprint or sometime of signature to prove that I stayed in that cave and what I’ve done.
Hungry language
When making the language for food I noticed that we had to decided to use basic shapes of triangles, circles, and even lines as a way to help represent different type of foods that most people usually eat in their daily lives that they could just point to them. We chose use pictures as a way to create a language because we thought it would be the best way to describe the foods we had in mind without it being easily confused with each other. Also, we thought it would good idea use pictures as you could simply combine the two picture if you wanted a certain food. The simple thought of using shapes for food wasn’t the challenge, but how to create small changes in the food symbols so they can different from one another that are so similar to each other for example, the difference between regular cup yogurt and yogurt that has fruit inside is show through adding circles inside the cup. I have noticed that when creating the pictures we did use the main shape of the food that it is most known as to represent them, like pizza is usually known to people to be in a triangle or an ice cream is a triangle with a curve line on top in alphabetical order.
Graphic Design History
Graphic design has different meanings to others. Some will say that graphic design is like fine art as it can be used as a way to communicate with others what emotion that they want to express or what they want people to feel when they see it. Others however see it as way to simply to create things that would either help sell products or to promote certain thoughts about what is happening in around the world. Most wouldn’t really think that pretty much everything around them, from the clothes they wear to the simple food that they decide to buy would be considered graphic design. I do see graphic design as little bit of both as they can be used as such, but I also see it as a different way to help others in need. For graphic design in history I don’t know too much of the past other than that they were used more as propaganda to help the cause for the wars and to support them. Also, they were used through out the ages as a simple way to show their ideas and thoughts to those who couldn’t read through images as well as different movements that changed the current style over time.
