The challenges regarding developing a language is varied and vast, but one of the most prominent issues is being original. Our language, which goes by the name of Waffleian Klingon, is heavily inspired by the Roman alphabet, but with some changes sprinkled throughout. Our language was simplistic in nature and wasn’t too far off from its source material. One pattern most team members noticed during the brainstorming is that our language was basically the standard American alphabet but with dots and lines. You can never have too many dots and lines. It’s like the spice of calligraphy. I do believe, however, that the language might be a little inconvenient for everyday usage, due to its complex structures. To have a successful (and actually used) language, you need to be able to distinguish symbols from each other, but it shouldn’t take you three minutes to write a single sentence. That’s probably why language evolved from picture-based systems to the current letter-based systems. It’s easier to write and is simplistic. Those two traits alone are the most important traits in my opinion. Even if you’re a crappy artist, it’s really hard to mess up drawing an A or B. But drawing a fish leaves more room for error.
