They seem to be…words…of some sort..

Challenges for creating a new language is having one that all can agree on or at least coming to a compromise. Personally, the way we did our language was not the way I would have had it. It was a lot harder than it had to be, and honestly it didn’t truly follow the directions. What was discussed among the group was to come up with symbols for prefixes, suffixes, and word roots. After that, to create a word you would combine those symbols together and that would be the new word. It sounds like it would’ve been a good idea, but it would have been easier to just create symbols or pictures for the 26 letters, instead of doing what we had. Another challenge is creating something that matches the letter that you are trying to represent–have it be somewhat cohesive.

I did notice that with other groups that there was a lot more thought and meaning behind the symbols and pictures, which makes the alphabet that the group created a lot more believable. With ours, the symbols weren’t discussed as well as they should have been.

I think that our language evolved the way it did because nothing truly stays the same; we’re constantly changing, even if its little by little. As it was said in class, we use emoji’s a lot more than we used to for communicating through text messaging. It’s interesting to think of where we’re going with our language now that we are a bit more advanced than we used to be.

Cave paintings? More like, #caveselfies

The question “why were cave paintings so significant?” is a difficult question to answer if you haven’t taken an Art History class, but this is a breakdown for those who haven’t: cave paintings were extremely important at the time because it kick started what we study and practice today. Not only that, but back then you could consider them recordings of what was happening at the time. Some of the early beings back then drew and painted animals, themselves, warnings, or what they did such as hunting and maybe even religious type things. The animals differed from where the early beings were located, but more times then not, bison would be the subject in the paintings. In my eyes, these paintings were intentional, because it was one of the ways they conversed.

If I were an early human, I would want to leave behind the instruments I used and paint everything that went on at the time. I think the early beings covered all the basics, so it’s kind of hard to say what new things I would add to the mix of subjects they depicted. The need to communicate has always been there for humans. I want to compare us to a wolf pack. They communicate, and they stick together for survival, and back then it was the same thing for us. To survive, they stuck together. I believe that without communication at that time there wouldn’t have been any progression as far as language goes. Who knows where we would be now. Wouldn’t that set us back? With that being said, they communicated with these paintings, along with any other way they developed.

I just burned my tongue drinking coffee

What is Graphic Design? Well, I believe that its everything. As my High School teacher once said, “Art is everywhere. It’s at the desk you’re using, it’s in the car you drive, it’s in the chair you sit in, and the T.V. you watch. It’s in everything.” I wholeheartedly believe that. Some people fail to realize that it’s a huge part of all of our lives. A lot of people think that the most important field to go in is anything medical related or anything that is going to make them “top dollars.” I’m not saying that it’s not–my fiance is graduating from University of Michigan-Flint with a Bachelor’s in Nursing, and after I’ve graduated with my Associate of Fine Arts I’m going back for Dental Assisting. But most of the people I’ve asked, “Do you think art is important?” have said, “Well….sort of, but-” and that “but” said it right there. No need to go further, I understand. Oh I almost forgot, the clothes you wear and the iPhone you use, who made those? How were they made? Must have had some silly designers of some sort make it so you can use those items. I can’t say it enough: it’s in everything we use, and it’s important.

What do I currently know about Graphic Design history? Not much at the moment. When I took the first part to this class way back in fall of 2014, I did learn a lot. But like many, if I don’t use the information that I’ve taken in, then i’ll lose it. Repetition is key for me and learning.
